On August 17, 1945, Indonesia declared its independence from the Netherlands. This year, the country celebrates 80 years of “unity in diversity.” But behind the celebration lie complex histories and painful questions. What did the independence achieved in 1945 mean for those connected to this past? And what does freedom mean today when, for some, it still remains out of reach?
From various perspectives, we reflect on Indonesia’s independence. We celebrate the country’s cultural richness while critically examining the legacy of colonialism, the complexities of migration, the layered meanings of freedom, and the ongoing struggle for independence.
